Do's
- Drink plenty of water! People with Sjogren's Syndrome need to drink at the very minimum 64oz of water a day.
- Drink beverages with added electrolytes to help you stay hydrated. Such as Gatorade, Vitamin Water, or apple juice.
- Suck on sugar-free hard candies to stimulate the saliva production in the mouth.
- Eat fresh high water content produce like: lettuce, watermelon, grapes, spinach, peaches, cucumber, melons, corn, tomatoes, apples, bananas, blueberries, peas, potatoes, zucchini, summer squash, broccoli, grapefruit, oranges, strawberries, pineapple, plums, eggplant, bell peppers, celery and any other fresh juicy fruits and veggies you can find.
- Freeze your favorite fruit juices to make your own popsicles.
- Freeze fresh fruits, grapes, watermelon and blueberries and bananas are my favorite to eat frozen.
- Use a cucumber lotion for your skin, it will help you feel cool and keep your skin hydrated.
- Use moisturizing eye drops, the air from air conditioners and fans can dry out the eyes.
- Don't go hungry! Your body needs the right nutrients to help keep it healthy and hydrated.
- Don't drink caffeine or alcohol on really hot days or when you're feeling dehydrated. Both caffeine and alcohol dehydrate you quickly.
- Don't exercise outside when it's really hot.
- Don't exercise when you are feeling dehydrated, the extra sweating means you are losing more precious electrolytes.
- Skip the bread, breads soak up liquids in your stomach.
- Don't wait until you are thirsty, it's usually too late by then. In order to stay hydrated you need to drink throughout the day consistently.
- Don't hesitate to go to your doctor or the emergency room if you feel dehydrated.
